Landslide in Sichuan, volunteers and villagers worked together to repair the road

Last night, there was a heavy rain. The only access to the rehabilitation hospital located in the remote mountainous area of Sichuan Province was blocked by landslides due to heavy rain. Volunteers and villagers worked together to repair the road!

As a result, the road was restored to normal. I am very grateful to the volunteers and villagers for their help.

Child Protection:

Matteo Ricci Social Service (RSS) began to care for the weakest with a benevolent heart. This is just a door to get closer to the disadvantaged. It is necessary to continuously strengthen and deepen our own capabilities. On the road of sustainable development, in addition to responding to the needs of partners and ourselves, we must continue to strengthen the awareness and attention of RSS internal employees to protect the disadvantaged, and provide the greatest help to the adults and children we serve. Since 2019, we have held a number of internal trainings on protecting children from harm in preparation for the establishment of RSS's internal child protection policy. Although affected by the epidemic, in 2021 we also conducted training on protecting the disadvantaged for volunteer groups serving rehabilitation centers. It is hoped that through the establishment and implementation of policies, RSS's work in caring for and protecting the disadvantaged will receive a positive response.

There are some volunteers in our various rehabilitation hospitals who sew clothes, quilts, etc. for leprosy rehabilitation hospitals... Although the geographical distance from Yunnan to Sichuan is very long, love is close and has not been interrupted.

Nostalgia for Home

Grandpa Jiang arrived at the leprosy sanatorium in 1954 and is the only survivor of the first group that came here. At the sanatorium, they often talked about their childhood, about the mountains and waters of their homeland, about the people and things, vaguely feeling their nostalgia for home. After discussing it as a group, the sisters decided to help them fulfill this wish. After multiple coordinations, Grandpa Jiang finally saw his longing realized: returning home to briefly reunite with his loved ones and see the landscapes of his childhood once again.

It has been 70 years since he left his home!

70 years that finally froze on March 24, 2024. Today, with a clear sky and a gentle breeze, the sun shines, and the sky also rejoices at the return of Grandpa Jiang. At eight in the morning, his nephew and grandson came to pick him up by car to take him back, and they will return to the sanatorium three days later at noon. Although it was only three days, the elderly man felt completely satisfied and full of happiness.

Today is the second day of his return, and the elderly man is still radiant and full of energy, talking with other elders about what he has seen and heard at home: the old houses have been demolished, there are only apartment buildings, the road is right at the main entrance, there is a school, and you can also hear someone running and playing a trumpet; I thought it was an army, but I was told it’s recruits in training (recruit training camp).

As a volunteer, seeing the satisfied smile of the elderly man, I also feel deeply satisfied.

The value of service lies in this.

Life is about being encouraged and growing from challenges and pressures

Thinking back to ten years ago, when I first came to the rehabilitation center, I was always so stupid. After a few months, I felt stressed because I always asked others for advice. I even thought about becoming a deserter. At this time, I received great encouragement from the team and affirmed my work: no one is worse than others.

Later, all the recovered patients were physically disabled and mentally strong, and their lives also affected me, especially when I was unwell.

In the past ten years, challenges and pressures have continued to arise. Fortunately, with the continuous improvement of services, there are also various kinds of help, both in terms of material and learning, and I have also jumped into the challenge together.

Build a bridge of love

"Look who they are? Keep it in our hearts and witness once again the hope of life for bind patients".

One day in September, volunteers from Matteo Ricci's social services received a contact from a hospital doctor. There was an inpatient with a special condition and wanted to apply for medical fee reduction. After contacting the patient, the volunteers required the patient to submit a referral certificate. After being able to assist in the application and learning that the patient's hospitalization deposit was borrowed, the volunteer found the Second People's Hospital from the county hospital and then contacted the municipal medical insurance and transferred the patient back to the Provincial Care Hospital. Multiple relays finally connected the patients with state aid and Matteo Ricci’s social service assistance funds.

And building this bridge is the best source of human beings.

Gratitude is action 💖💕💖💕

Since serving the recovered patients in 2006, I have heard, seen, and learned the mission of "I am not here to be served, but to serve others."🌟🌟🌟🌟

I changed my mind from talking about "hemp", and gradually developed into a brother-in-law with people who have recovered from leprosy. When we go out, the recovered patients are looking forward to, waiting for, and caring about us. When we came back, they went back to their rooms with peace of mind. When I was tired from work, seeing them all made me feel warm in my heart. When we come back, we will also buy them food and drinks, just like parents treat their children, full of love, which can only be shown in actions!

Matteo Ricci's leaders and staff at all levels also take action. Whether they come to visit the recovered patients and us, or when we go out to study or travel, they are all hands-on, regardless of their own hard work, and take extra care of us. What I experienced was the total love I felt for the recovered person. “Owe no one any more except to love one another, for whoever loves another has fulfilled the law” (Romans 13:8).

Example to learn from💕💕

Three volunteers came to Dechang Rehabilitation Hospital in Liangshan Prefecture, Sichuan Province, where they provided voluntary care for the elderly, weak, sick and disabled, as if they were relatives. He is warm and kind to us, and he is so kind when we ask for help. The three of them got up early every day to clean the yard, do laundry, wash the walls, and clean the windows. We were moved to tears by their true feelings.

Volunteers walk through the mountains and out of the city every month to help disabled elderly people buy various daily necessities, and then deliver the items to their homes. Their selfless dedication and love set an example for people to follow.
